I don't really agree with this list. Most of these movies are ones I have never even heard of, let alone seen. A lot of the movies listed are from the 1940's-1970's time period. The movies I did recognize are some of the more common movies. For example, Star Wars, E.T., and Rocky. Since most of these movies aren't from recent times, I would say that it is very hard for me to agree with this list, since my generation of movies and what is currently playing now is so different.

I agree with this statement that our generation can't relate to these movies because they are from an older era. This list should be updated.

I agree. I believe that a lot of these movies are much older and that more recent movies should be included on the list.

What I found truly interesting about this list was the fact that I saw no movies after 1997 or so. Personally, I love newer movies. The emotion is captured better, in my opinion, with better technology, clearer shots, and more appealing backgrounds. I don't hate watching old movies though, many times they have a bit more charm, and elegance not found in today's films. So to see many films on here without those components leads us to the question of who comprised this list? Some sort of board or association, whatever that is supposed to mean. But maybe it's just because they're old, and like the movies of their time. Or maybe I'm a bit blind, and older movies are sincerely better than the ones being produced today. Out of the films on this list I've only seen a few, but the ones I have seen weren't astonishing to me.

I believe the list was made by older people because none of the movies listed were from the 2000's or from the 2010's.

just because a movie is old doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to be listed; however, I do agree with the fact that its kind of ridiculous there's not even one movie that came out past 1996.

I have only seen a handful of these movies and I personally do not agree with this list. Being a teenager, I really don't spend my time watching older movies when there are newer ones with newer actors who I know of. I feel this list is a bit bias towards the older generations because I think if you were to take a poll of high school students the list would be much different and there would be newer movies with newer actors.

I agree this list is old and outdated. Many of these movies are very old so our generation won't like the list as much causing the list to be extremely different than it is.

I have only seen some of these movies. Most of these movies are very old so our generation probably have not seen any of these movies. So I do not agree with this list because I haven't seen most of the movies that are on this list. If the list had more movies from the 2000's to today I may agree with the list more.

I agree with you that if there were more movies from the 2000's to today then I may agree with the list more. I feel this list is going to have to change since it can't be the year 3000 and movies from the 1900's still on the list of top 100 movies.

I agree, the movies from our generation can also be considered for this list. Also a lot of those movies on the list has poor quality and that has to come as a factor because it is often difficult to understand.

I think that there should be some movies from the 2000's also.

I get the list, but I don't agree with the list. I'm big into movies and am even going to pursue film as my major in college; therefor, it's pretty obvious I watch a lot of movies. However, I haven't seen nor haven't even heard of the #1 movie on the list. Just like everyone else has been saying for the most part these movies are old. Star Wars is from the 70's but has pioneered so many things now used in film as well as was a mega hit during it's time. Forest Gump is an American Icon however it's ranking is all the way on the second page. Movies that last ages, such as Rocky, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Pulp Fiction, deserve to be on this list. Just because a movie was a major hit of its time doesn't mean its a top 100 movie. Along with that just because a certain movie was the first film to do something doesn't necessarily reserve it a spot on the list. There's plenty of modern day movies that have pioneered things such as 3D and CGI and none of them made it. The list isn't horrible, it does have plenty of classic movies; however, it definitely needs a little update.

btw i only knew 30/100 movies

I don't totally disagree with you; there are certainly modern movies that deserve a spot on this list, and some old ones that deserved to be knocked off. But if you're looking to be a film major in college, it's honestly surprising that you've never heard of Citizen Kane, the #1 movie. While of course it's old and kind of difficult to relate to, there are certainly artistic aspects in its cinematography that make it worth your time to watch. I recommend watching it because you'll probably end up talking about it in one of your film studies classes in college, along with many of the other old movies on this list.

I definitely get everyone's confusion about the list! It's dealing with some old titles--I was actually surprised at how many I've seen, but I watched a lot of them as part of my English courses at college. the list can certainly--and probably should be--revised. However, there are some great, classic films on here that everyone should watch--some of them were just a 'first' for their time and led the way for movies today.

I have seen 7 of the top 100 movies and of those 7, I really only like 1, (Forest Gump). These may have been the top 100 movies when my grandparents were growing up, but many kids my age have not seen most of these movies. There is not one movie on that list from the 2000's, which is when really advanced special effects started coming out and making movies even greater.

But maybe we, just as the list makers, are biased. Doesn't everyone favor their own music from their own time period, fashion trends, ect? I think that maybe the list shouldn't be so general, and that instead, it should be titled more along the lines of "Best movies of the 1900's"
Gillian Martin

I've seen many of the movies on this list. It doesn't matter that they're old, which many provide as a reason why they haven't seen them. Many of the movies on this list are truly art; the scenes are carefully planned to every little detail--props, angle, attitude. Personally, I feel movies nowadays pale in comparison. Of course, the quality of the film is much better, but I feel as if today's popular movies lack true cinematic touches--much like the art that the opening scene to The Graduate (#7) has. Most of today's movies just try to fit in the biggest star with the most action/drama possible and focus on the plot rather than the filming itself. While maybe the creators of this top 100 list were older and biased as a result of their time period, they certainly put more emphasis on movies with cinematic art than on movies that are "popular" nowadays.

I like that you mentioned how the movies on this list are art. I think it is impressive what they could make without advanced technology like we have today. I think you are right; the main character's role is played by the most popular person the movie casting crew could hire and the movies just show the plot.

I cannot judge the list of movies because I have not seen many of them. I love the Wizard of Oz, which is number six on the list. I have not seen The Godfather, but I know people love it so I can see why it is number so high on the list. This list was clearly made a long time ago, so I think that the top 100 best movies have changed, but I do not think these movies are necessarily bad because they are old.

I have watched nine of these movies, and can agree they are definitely ones that stand out. I think this is an accurate portrayal of the top 100, however I feel this list is missing movies from our current time. These classics will always be known, but its time to expose new movies of our generation to this list.

I agree with you. Of these 100 movies a have only seen a handful as well and of those movies they are ones such as Forest Gump or Rocky. The movies I have seen seem to be the more popular of the list considering they are the most commonly known. I agree with the popular ones. But, the amount of unknown movies to me overpowers the ones I have seen and know about making me disagree with the list as a whole. I definitely believe some more current and well known films need to be added to the list as well.

Really great discussions, ladies. You all make excellent points--a lot of these films are definitely examples of more than just 'entertainment'. They were made to create an impact and to set a new precedence. However, that's not to say that there aren't films more recent that have done the same--Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of a kind and came out in 2004.

I have seen two of these movies, wow. I agree with this list because all of these movies are classics and show real american culture. However it couldn't hurt to update the list with the movies that have recently came out. If they applicable for this list.

That is true, the list does indeed show real american culture but it is a little outdated. Times have changed and so have the movies

I think this list is extremely out of date. Although some of these movies are classics, half the populations hasn't seen any of them. If there's going to be a list of the top 100 movies, I think everybody who reads it should know at least half of them. there are movies on the current list that I haven't even heard of.
Rob Scolaro

I agree with this list as most of the films listed are classics that stemmed the influence for modern films. Although current day films can be well renowned in their own right, the lack of modern movies is justified as many modern films were inspired and grew from ideas established in classics listed above.
M-L

Well said, Rob. It's very difficult to find a story that is truly 'unique' these days. Today's films stem from stories that are classics--whether in film for or literature. I think it's important to see some of the classic films so that you don't miss out on modern references and allusions--the same reasoning stands behind why we read Romeo and Juliet, The Great Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye etc.

I've only seen 3 of the movies on this list and I haven't even heard of the majority of the movies on this list either. For people around my age, this list is pretty much irrelevant, because all of these movies were before our time. Comments are closed.
